Setting Up Your Coop

What to consider

When Putting Your Coop Up

1

Choose a location

Choosing the right location for your coop is crucial for the well-being of your flock. You will need a spot that has both sun and shade. Ensure the sight is well drained to avoid any health issues for the chickens. The area should also be easily accessible for you to do daily maintenance and easily visible to help keep your chickens safe.

2

Choose a size

Decide the size of the coop based on how many chickens you will have. You will need 2-3 square feet of space per bird. For example, if you want 5 chickens, plan on a coop that is around 10-15 square feet. You will also need nesting boxes, perches for roosting, and a sturdy door.

3

DIY or Buy

Decide if you want to purchase a pre-made coop, or build your own. If you build your own, you may also purchase building plans.

4

Choosing materials

Make sure the coop is made from sturdy materials, such as pressure treated wood and high-quality mesh. Use the wire mesh for ventilation and security. For an extra layer of protection against predators, bury the mesh 6-10 inches under the ground to help prevent predators from digging underneath the coop to gain access to the chickens.

5

Weather-proofing

Make sure the coop is made from weather resistant materials. Make sure the roof is leakproof to keep the coop dry and warm. I would recommend insulating the coop to keep the chickens warm in the winter, but do not use a heater. The chickens do know how to acclimate themselves to the colder weather.

6

Installing a run

Installing a run is a great idea if your chickens are not able to free range. A run still gives them ample space to safely forage outside.
